Northern
Resident Killer Whales are in the Straits in numbers with
some working their way back and forth from Nodales Channel to the
upper Johnstone Strait. Transient Bigg's appear to have been staying
farther South, but have been quite stealthy for most part. Humpback
Whales, on the other hand have been popping up in all sorts of
locations along our inside waters. We have fewer than expected
Pacific White Sided Dolphins, Dall's and Harbour Porpoise to report,
but we do have a couple of unconfirmed sightings of Fin and Minke
Whales. Rumours have been flying about the NRKW's known as the A36
brothers, 'Plumper' A37 has been sick for quite a while and we have
been closely following his status. Unfortunately, once he and his
brother came into the upper Johnstone Strait, there is no open
conversation of how he's is actually doing or where he was actually
last seen. We hope to find out for the next report. There is a
likelihood that he is gone, but we thought that a couple of times
before, and so far cannot confirm it. In our Links, we have the
latest on the disentanglement of one of the NRKW's from the I15's who
was caught in a fisherman's net the other day.

no details.

desolation sound for past weeks. Minke solitary, Lewis Channel off
Refuge Cove entrance, seaford, marten island and tenedos bay.
After
asking for more details and / or photos (none received): ..... I was
unsure myself as there were and are Humpbacks in the area.
Specifically, the sicle-shaped dorsal fin was the most distinct
feature as well as a greyness to the surface of the back just forward
of the fin. The whale was feeding and did not expose more than the
area just forward of the fin through to area forward of the tail
flukes. The flukes were visible only a couple of times and we were
both sure that we only saw dark colouration. I searched many photos
in different sources, as pale seems to be most common, but there
seems to be a lot of variation. No photos as we were 5:30 am just
following exhalation sounds that had wakened me. Yesterday a very
knowlegable person... must be as he agreed with me... independently
noted that he had seen a Minke in Desolation. We compared notes and I
am convinced. Today, as I was writing to you a person came into the
gallery with the same story, and a video; sicle-shaped dorsal and
dark underside of flukes, approx 25=feet only, smooth glossy skin
more like dolphin etc. She will forward iphoto image when she returns
home. Minke Whale was on south eastern tip of Cortes Island, a bit
south of my sighting and west.

On
Aug 18th we found a very large whale at the junction of Pryce
Channel. Homfray Channel and Toba Inlet mouth. We initially thought
there were two whales but in the end it was one laying on the surface
fairly stationary. We never did see a jaw or tail but saw it blow,
roll forward showing small fin and twice it rolled showing flukes.
Finally we saw a whoosh of red liquid suspended within which were
creamy white globules. We moved off at this point. There was a small
log that remained close to the whale back. We were concerned and
amazed. Any information would be helpful. We are experienced coastal
travellers and local to the area. It was not a Humpback. We did once
see a Fin Whale off Malcolm Island.
After
we asked for more details and / or photos (none received); the reply:
I
did pass this on to a govt office and they said I checked off all the
Fin Whale check points. Photos taken with an iPad proved useless. We
are pretty sure of id. Final decision made on basis of time between
blow. back roll forward and sight of small fin. The back is very long
and it takes a while to see fin. That's all I can tell you. Thanks,
