Humpback Whales Finally, Orca, Dolphins and Porpoise

A couple of Humpback Whales finally showed up breaching off Campbell River. This should mean we'll be seeing more of them in the upper Georgia Strait, so keep your eyes open and please remember to let us know. Transient Bigg's have been around as well as a J-Pod, Southern Resident Killer Whale report. Some Pacific White Sided Dolphins, Dall's and Harbour Porpoise round out the report.

This could be the fifth springtime in a row that scientists will estimate that more than 1,000 pairs of gray whales will have swum past Point Piedras Blancas on their way to Alaska, according to marine biologist Wayne Perryman.
And that would be a first, a consecutive record in the 23 years scientists have been counting mom-and-baby pairs migrating past Piedras from mid-March to May, he said.
Drones are used to take pictures of the whales and calves, monitor their condition.

A group of Killer Whales were caught on video over the weekend chasing and eventually killing a Gray Whale calf near Cannery Row in Monterey.

Monterey Bay Whale Watch posted video of the hunt that lasted over an hour, covering several miles of shore in Monterey.

Ultimately, Long told The Huffington Post, oxygen-deprived oceans may have “significant impacts on marine ecosystems” and leave some areas of ocean all but uninhabitable for certain species.

He set up a website for people to report sightings and collaborated with the Sea Watch Foundation.

In 2007, John sought the help of marine mammal scientists, including Tom Felce, who now runs MWDW. They began

We witness the ancient turning points in the whales evolutionary journey, and how the ice age became its unlikely savior.
