Cetaceans have been seen in abundance in many of the inland waterways. Although the season is changing, our water conditions are ideal for algae and fish to thrive, supporting the whales and dolphins at the top of the food chain. Our report includes a sighting last Wednesday of a pod of approximately 50 Dall's porpoises in Nodales Channel. Transient Biggs Orca remain in many areas. Of note is a single Transient Biggs Orca which was tracked for a couple of days as it travelled through Calm Channel, Ramsay Arm, and Sutil Channel. Last Friday, another group of Transient Biggs Orca -the T002C pod- were off Chatham Point and they were able to catch a few seals. Humpback Whales have appeared in many waterways and a number of mother and calf Humpback pairs were observed. The report includes a few sightings of Pacific White-Sided Dolphins, Harbour Porpoises, and Resident Orca.

Our first Real Time Monitoring Station is coming together with the last few customized components. Every aspect to this install needs to be a co-ordinated group effort.
We are calling for volunteers to help us complete this project in the Powell River area. Our needs are electrical, internet connectivity, concrete and fibreglass work, a couple of spare strong hands, and possibly some welding. We will co-ordinate with our diver volunteers as the project evolves.

Two whales, one transient orca and one humpback, were found dead in Vancouver Island waters over the last few days, and now teams from Fisheries and Oceans Canada are trying to figure out how they died.
The orca, a mature male, was reported by an angler in Grapplers Inlet Sound near Bamfield on Thursday.
Fisheries and coast guard crews were able to perform a necropsy on Saturday.
DFO Marine Mammal Coordinator Paul Cottrell said there was no visible trauma or obvious cause of death, and tissue samples have been sent for toxicology.
The humpback was spotted late last week as well in Quatsino Sound.
Crews were still attempting to secure it Monday so they can perform a necropsy.

It took six hours and more than a dozen people to rescue a juvenile whale near the tiny First Nations community of Klemtu, north of Bella Bella.
The 35-foot humpback whale became entangled in an anchor line near one of the empty aquaculture sites belonging to Marine Harvest, a local fish-farming company.
The company contacted the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, who dispatched a team of staff researchers headed by marine mammal coordinator Paul Cottrell to assess the situation.
Cottrell says when his crew arrived they found the animal barely moving, trapped by an anchor line that was cutting into its skin.
“We knew this was serious and we didn’t have a lot of time,” says Cottrell.

Ol' Tom, a killer whale who's been spotted with some regularity off the coast of Nova Scotia over the last eight years, was seen Saturday on a whale watching expedition near Brier Island.
